Being pregnant is one of the biggest blessings! You are literally growing a human being! While there are many amazing things associated with pregnancy, like that precious bump and mommy-to-be glow, there are also some not-so-glamorous things about pregnancy. For example, swollen ankles, aches and pains, and the dreaded morning sickness!
Especially in the first trimester, 70% of all pregnant women experience some form of morning sickness. Isn’t that a staggering number? That means, chances are, if you’re in your first trimester, you are experiencing some form of nausea associated with your pregnancy. Whether it’s simply food aversions and slight nausea or full blown sickness that lasts all day, none of it is fun!
6 Tips for Morning Sickness
Now that we’ve explored some key must-haves for when your stomach feels upset during your pregnancy, let’s discuss the biggest tips for battling morning sickness! At times throughout your first trimester, you may simply feel hopeless. You may feel like there’s absolutely nothing you can do to improve how you feel.
But, the truth is, even though you may not be able to completely “cure” your nausea, there are so many things you can do to help ease the symptoms and keep you and your baby healthy, hydrated, and well-nourished!

1. Stay hydrated
Staying hydrated is so crucial for both you and your baby’s health! Even though you may not feel like it, it is incredibly important that you drink plenty of fluids! There may be times in your first trimester where water doesn’t sound good to you, and that’s totally normal! You may need to start thinking outside of the box when it comes to hydration!
Here are some alternative ways to stay hydrated if water is a struggle…
- Sip on water
Just because you need to stay hydrated doesn’t mean that you need to jug a gallon a day! Simply sip on water here and there. Try to keep water with you at all times, and when you’re up for it, take a swig or two!
- Add natural flavors
Many pregnant mamas-to-be don’t crave water in their first trimester. Adding some natural flavors like lemon or infusing berries can make a huge difference!
- Make popsicles
You don’t have to drink fluids to stay hydrated! You could make yourself some delicious and healthy popsicles to snack on! Not to mention, if you’re feeling nauseous, you could even make some nausea pops by adding some ginger and lemon!
2. Eat as soon as you wake
Nausea and an empty stomach never mix. More often than not, morning sickness is in the morning because it’s the time in which your stomach is at its emptiest. So, it’s important to get something on your stomach as soon as you wake up.
Some women find that their morning sickness greatly subsides if they eat something even before they get out of bed. Keeping saltine crackers on your bedside table so that you can have one as soon as you way up may help if you notice strong bouts of sickness first things in the morning.
3. Eat smaller meals
Similar to the previous tip, it’s important to keep food on your stomach at all times to prevent sickness. Because of this, try eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day.
4. Bland is better
If you’re experiencing a great deal of food (or smell) aversions, try and keep your diet bland for a bit. At the end of the day, you need food. Yes, it would be ideal to have the most healthy foods like salads and green smoothies for every meal, but oftentimes, that’s not feasible for the first trimester.
If you’re experiencing morning sickness, try sticking with blander foods for while such as: toast, crackers, rice, etc.
5. Listen to your body
Food aversions are real, especially during your first trimester! One of the best tips for morning sickness is to simply listen to your body! If your body is rejecting even the thought of a certain food, listen. It may be hard and frustrating, but unless it is rejecting something completely necessary like water and hydration, be patient and listen!
6. Talk to your doctor
Lastly, if you’re struggling, talk with your doctor. Many women shy away from asking their doctor because they don’t want to be seen as a complainer. But, you’re not complaining! Your health and wellbeing is your doctor’s priority, and they have a lot of experience working with women in their first trimester! If your sickness is serious and unrelentless, they have medicine and other tricks to help.
