15 Newborn Essentials for Fall | No Matter What the Weather

newborn essentials for fall

When you are expecting a baby in the fall, it’s easy to wonder what all you will need. Since the temperatures can range so greatly, it can feel a bit overwhelming to know what all is necessary. Having these 15 newborn essentials for fall on hand will help to feel prepared for every situation that may arise.

My daughter was born at the end of July, so she was technically still a newborn during the fall. We were living in Virginia at the time, so the temperatures were pretty warm. That’s why I wrote a whole post on Newborn Essentials for Summer because as a first-time mom I learned a lot.

Then in October, I went back home to upstate New York to visit some family and friends…… and this is when I realized how unprepared I really was. I had no idea what to pack my daughter for the fluctuating temperatures of autumn.

Take it from the mom who overpacked and still had no idea what her baby would need for this season. We are going to chat about everything from nursing covers to clothes. These 15 newborn essentials for fall will help to keep your baby happy and will keep you from stressing!

First, we are going to chat about ALL things clothes!

1. Variety of Clothing Staples

What has really surprised me is the amount of variety that you need in clothes. You don’t need a lot of one type of clothing. I think it’s important to have warm and cool weather essentials to pair.

Now keep in mind, your baby is a newborn for about 3 months. This means that you will need to buy both newborn and 3-month clothing. Some babies don’t ever fit into newborn clothes. You can read about what size clothes to baby for your new baby here!

Fall Clothes Checklist for a Newborn:

  • Long Sleeve Onesies
  • Short-Sleeve Onesies
  • Pants
  • Socks

[Also, I have a complete guide of all the clothes you will need for a newborn here!]

2. Sweater

Since my daughter was a preemie in July, I didn’t even think to buy a sweater! I ended up needing to go buy one and really wish I had something simple that could be paired with any outfit!

3. Fleece Coat

When those temperatures dip, it’s important to have a thin fleece coat on hand. Babies can’t regulate their body temperatures yet, so you will need to keep them bundled up.

Remember, that you can not put them in a car seat with it!

4. Zip-Up Sleepers

I would highly recommend investing in a bunch of zip-up sleepers. My daughter lived in these!!! For fall, you will need a mix of cotton and fleece, just depending on how warm it is out.

5. Hat

This might seem obvious, but as a first-time mom, I didn’t have a small warm hat for my daughter. Having something lighter for warmer days and another hat that helps to keep the wind out.

I loved going out on walks but found that I struggled to keep her little ears warm from the wind.

6. Car Seat Cover

As I mentioned earlier, you can’t put a jacket on your baby in the car seat. Getting a warm car seat cover will help to keep them toasty along with keeping the wind out!

I really like this 3-in-1 car seat cover that can be used as a bug shield, sun shade, or wind blocker!

There are so many different kinds out there, so find something that will work well for your climate.

7. Stroller Cover

If you plan on taking your baby for a walk, get a stroller cover. Just like with a car seat cover it will help to keep the baby warm and the wind out!

8. Variety Of Blankets

Can you tell the theme with a fall baby? It’s all about variety!!!! I absolutely loved muslin blankets for my daughter. They are breathable, yet warm.

Although, when we would go out on walks I needed a much thicker blanket. Make sure you have a few different thicknesses and materials on hand.

9. Humidifier

With fall comes dryer air, which for some is much appreciated. BUT for babies, this can be difficult. Get a humidifier to keep the air moist, so that your baby can breathe easily and avoid mucus build-up.

10. Baby Lotion

Your baby’s skin is so delicate. As I mentioned previously, fall brings dryer air which means your baby’s skin will need a little extra TLC. I love Tubby Todd’s baby lotion, not only does it smell amazing but its gentle and super moisturizing.

11. Cotton + Flannel Bassinet Sheets

You will definitely want simple cotton sheets that you can change out for flannel on those extra chilly nights. This will ensure that if baby moves around, the sheets don’t feel too chilly.

12. Halo Flannel Sleepsack

I’m a HUGE fan of the Halo sleepsacks. I actually wrote a whole review about them here. It doesn’t matter if your newborn like to be snuggled uptight or arms out, this gives you the option to swaddle them in a way that makes them feel comfortable.

13. Knit Nursing Cover/Poncho

I love these stylish nursing covers!! They are perfect to go over a long sleeve shirt or turtle neck. We are Amma have so many beautiful colors. I love that this is breathable so baby has plenty of air while nursing.

14. Solly Wrap

I think the cooler months are absolutely the best for babywearing. I loved having my daughter snuggled on my chest all day. It also gave me the ability to be hands-free.

My FAVORITE baby wrap is by Solly Baby! You truly can’t beat the quality!!

All the fabric can look intimidating, BUT I promise my simple tutorial will walk you through it and you will be a pro in no time!

15. Babywearing Jacket

If you plan to be outside quite a bit, whether that be for an event or just daily walks, you will love a babywearing jacket. These allow baby to be tucked inside, nice and snug while you are still hands-free.

They are worth every penny!!! Most can be worn after you’re done babywearing too!

My Thoughts…

I loved having a newborn in the fall. This meant more cuddles and snuggles! Although no season is predictable, it’s important to have these newborn essentials for fall so you are prepared for any weather changes!
