Many families are fighting an unseen war. Each month, they face the same battle over and over again. The battle is full of charts and tracking, fear, medication and a long two week wait. Then comes a wave of hurt, while walking past the baby isle or sitting next to the couple with a newborn in church. The war is called infertility and it effects 10% of families. Letting God be in control of fertility is not an easy thing to do when the battle rages strong.
- “Everything happens for a reason.”
- “Just relax. It’s because you’re too stressed.”
- “At least it’s not ….”
These are all things that families facing infertility don’t want her to hear. It is hard to be surrounded by others who don’t know or understand the battle you face each day.
Each month seems to be filled with heartache and broken dreams. Especially when months turn into years of waiting, for two lines to show. Often hope will disappear. Joy can be found in knowing that the battle is not our, but the Lords. Victory is found in Him and is better than we could every conceive on our own.
Why Should You Let God Be In Control?

The Israelites were no stranger to facing battles that seemingly had no way out. I cannot help but think that when in captivity, a few brave men tried to take freedom into their own hands. However, when God stepped in and appointed Moses to lead the Israelite’s from captivity, is when victory started to become a reality. He led His people out of slavery and into the desert, where the Egyptians continued to pursue them. God’s people decided to pull out their typical complaints.
“Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you treated us this way, to bring us out of Egypt? Isn’t this the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians?’ For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” Exodus 14:11-12
Once again, God’s people seemed to forget about the sovereignty and power of their God. Moses remembered and preached truth to their hearts.
“Don’t be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh, which he will work for you today; for you will never again see the Egyptians whom you have seen today. 14 Yahweh will fight for you, and you shall be still.” Exodus 14:13-14
How did He fight their battle?
The Lord did indeed fight their battle. He did what only He could do. The Spirit of the Lord caused darkness to surround the Egyptian camp as they traveled through the desert. His same Spirit lit the way and led the Israelites through the night. When they came to the sea, God caused a strong wind to divide it and created dry land for his people to walk through. The water came down on the Egyptians, but God’s people went safely through. He created a way. He fought for his people like He always does.
Just like the Israelites, we often feel like the battle is ours to fight. The same God who has been claiming victory for his people for thousands of years, is the one who claims victory over ours. The battle over our fertility is not ours to win. He is the God who has opened and closed wombs for his glory in his timing. Throughout all of Scripture, we see barren women pleading with God to open their wombs.
Barren Women In The Bible

1. Sarah
God chose Sarah, once a barren woman, to be the wife of Abraham – the father of many nations.
2. Rebekah
He answered Isaac’s prayer and opened Rebekah’s womb. She had twins, Jacob and Esau. Jacob was instrumental in the lineage of Jesus.
3. Samson’s Mother
Samson’s mother was barren before God blessed her with a son!
4. Hannah
We see Hannah drawing close in her time of grief. God blesses her with a son, Samuel. Samuel spends his life serving the Lord.
All of these men were instrumental in God’s plan to send the Redeemer to rescue his people. The battle that each of their parent’s faced were all a part of the greater war that God was fighting for his people – the war over sin and death. In His perfect time, He opened wombs for his purpose, plan and glory.
Trusting in His Plan
Trusting God to fight the battle is not easy. We must preach truth to our hearts each day as we trust Him to fight for us. As we remember his goodness and learn to rely on him, we may just learn that the battle for fertility is truly a battle for our hearts.
- God is good. He does good.
- God is faithful, even when we are faithless.
- He is working all things for his glory and our good.
- He is the God of victories.
- God is sovereign over all.
- He is the Alpha and Omega – the Beginning and the End.
- He is redeeming all things according to his plan.
- His story is better.
- Even if not, He is still good.
His Plan is Bigger

We serve a faithful, sovereign King. He has proven himself faithful throughout all of redemptive history.
We pray for Him to work, declare who He is and trust His goodness and timing. Sometimes He says “wait” and sometimes He says “no.” We have to trust that even his “no” is good. His track record is faithfulness.
We can trust that whatever the outcome of the battle, the victory is his. We can trust that He will fight for us, just like He has always fought for his people. He opened the wombs of Sarah, Rebekah, and Hannah in just the right time in redemptive history. He will accomplish his plan for His glory and our good.
Count Every Blessing
Be sure to recognize every small victory. We have been blessed with so much on this earth. Every breath is supplied from the Lord. Every meal comes from his kindness. Each moment of laughter from his love for us. We often forget to count every blessing and proclaim every past victory when we are in the middle of the battle. We forget who has been fighting for our hearts from the moment of creation.
Despite all our earthly blessings, Jesus is even better. He is better than any other pursuit in this life – motherhood included. It’s hard to say and even harder to grasp. Being a wife doesn’t satisfy. Being a mother doesn’t satisfy. The perfect house doesn’t even come close to the Living Water. Only He satisfies out greatest thirst. He is our greatest gift and our greatest hope in life.
Take a minute to count every blessing and proclaim every victory – Jesus being the greatest. In your waiting, don’t miss the blessing of drawing closer to Him. In your grief, don’t miss his comfort. We’ve been given this time of waiting to remember His faithfulness and grow in hope. As we grow closer, we learn to trust. As we learn to trust, we remember that his plan his perfect and the victory is his.
Bible Verses About Letting God Be In Control
We Use the WEB translation of the Bible, but feel free to use your favorite version!
1. Romans 8:26-28
“In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
2. Hebrews 11:11
“By faith, even Sarah herself received power to conceive, and she bore a child when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised.”
3. Romans 5:3-6
“Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For while we were yet weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.”

Sweet friend, God is sovereign overall and He can be trusted. Above all, His character is good. God has shown his power through the opening wombs throughout all of history, in accordance with his plan of redemption. He even sent his only Son, at just the right time, to give his life as a ransom for many. After all He is a patient God, working all things for his glory and the good of those of trust in Him. He has been faithful, sister. You can trust Him. I am praying for you as you learn to trust him deeper each day.
