As parents, our hope is to raise this little boy to be a strong, independent follower of the Lord. More often than not, we forget that he won’t be little forever. We get caught up in the daily race of life. Between school, sporting events, and every other pressure and commitment that life brings, we can get lost. However, it’s important to remember that our biggest priority is to prepare our little boys to be good leaders, husbands, and fathers.
The most important thing we can practice through childhood and into his teen years is prayer. We can try our best to make him the best leader by teaching him as much as we want, dragging him to every Sunday morning church service, monitoring who his friends are, and more… But, ultimately, it’s only our job to plant the seed, to water it, and pray for the Holy Spirit to make his affections for the Lord grow.
Through prayer and example, we lay the foundations for our sons during childhood. No matter if your son hasn’t arrived yet or is 18, here are some Bible verses for sons that will help guide your prayers and focus for the years to come:
15 Bible Verses to Pray Over Your Son
Note: These Bible Verses are from the WEB (World English Bible) version. Each verse if coupled with a prayer for your son.
1. Love The Lord
- Mark 12:30
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’Deuteronomy 6:4-5 This is the first commandment.”
Prayer: Lord, help us to raise this little boy to love you above all else. That he would find his own relationship with you and would grow in his affections for you. Over his childhood, help us to be an example of what it looks like to truly love you. Thank you for sending Jesus as your example of unconditional love! Amen.
What better place to start this list than the first commandment? Above all else, it is our prayer as parents of sons that he develops a genuine love for Christ in childhood that he can carry with him for the rest of his life!
2. Trust in God
- Psalm 31:14
“But I trust in you, Yahweh. I said, ‘You are my God.’”
Prayer: Lord, as our son begins to explore his relationship with you, I pray that he will learn to trust in you. That he would see your plan for his life is perfect. I pray that as parents, we would display what it looks like to trust in you with our life. Remind us daily to be an example of you! Amen.
Through all of the ups and downs that this little boy will endure, trusting in God will bring such a peace and comfort.
3. Love Others
- Mark 12:31
“The second is like this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’Leviticus 19:18 There is no other commandment greater than these.’”
Prayer: Lord, I pray for the heart of my little boy. That he would find love for everyone around him. Even when someone does wrong against him, may he be patient and loving in his response. Prayer: Thank you for sending Jesus as our perfect example of love. Amen.
As a man, our sons will hopefully model Christ’s love with their future relationships. He must be both strong and gentle, loving others in a way that lets God’s love shine through.
4. Stand Strong
- 1 Corinthians 15:58
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
Prayer: Lord, help our little boy grow into a strong man. May he find his strength through you, in all of life’s circumstances. Amen!
One day, our sons will grow into men with families. It is important that he leads his family and stays strong when times get tough!
5. Stay Humble
- 1 Peter 5:5-7
“5 Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, to subject yourselves to one another; for ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ Proverbs 3:346 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.”
Prayer: Lord, humility is one of the greatest attributes a man can have. I pray that through your grace, he will humble himself. That he will think of others before himself and not let pride get in the way. Amen!
As a man leading a family, it is essential that he see his own faults, ask forgiveness when appropriate, and learn from his mistakes.
6. Heart Of Forgiveness
- Colossians 3:13
“13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.”
Prayer: Lord, we are all human and I know our son will make mistakes. There will be many friends and family members who do wrong against him, but help him to have a heart of forgiveness. Amen.
Just with humility, our sons must not only ask for forgiveness when they are at fault, but also have grace for others when they are at fault.
7. Give himself grace
- Ephesians 2:8
“8 for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,”
Prayer: Lord, as our son learns and grows, we know he will fall and make some mistakes. I pray through this process he would give himself the grace he deserves because of your goodness! Amen!
There are so many societal pressures to be perfect, and I want the sons of the world to know that, with God, they are enough!
8. Bring Glory to Him
- 1 Corinthians 10:31
“Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
Prayer: Lord, there is no greater hope than for this child to bring glory to you. That he would be a strong leader and encourager for your kingdom. Help us to nurture him in the ways needed, so he can be a light for you. Amen!
Just as there will be “downs” in life, there will also be “ups!” It is important that no matter what, our little boys give glory to God.
9. Grow to be a good husband and father
- 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7
“4 Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.”
Prayer: Lord, although he is little now, someday he will grow to be a husband and father. Help him to fully understand the meaning of love. That we can encourage him to learn patience, kindness, humility, and understanding. Through this journey of life, we pray that he would love with the same kind of unconditional love you have given to us.
This is one of the most crucial prayers for little boys! Providing for a family spiritually, physically, and emotionally is such a task that cannot be done without guidance from the Lord! It’s never too early to start praying this prayer!
10. Devoted to prayer
- Acts 6:4
“4 But we will continue steadfastly in prayer and in the ministry of the word.”
Prayer: Lord, prayer is one of the most beautiful gifts you have given us. Help this little one find joy in prayer with you. As we go through our daily life, help us to find time to pray with him. That we might set an example of a loving and trusting relationship with you. Amen!
Just as we will pray as an example to our sons, it is our hope that one day he has his own personal relationship with Christ in which he prays!
11. Have a thankful heart
- 1 Thessalonians 5:18
“18 In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.”
Prayer: Lord, everyday we are so grateful for this little boy. We are so lucky to be able to love and care for him. As he grows, help him to see all the blessings around him. That his heart would find gratitude for all the things you have given him. Amen!
It is so easy to get bogged down by life, but having a thankful heart can make such an enormous impact on our sons lives!
12. Pure Heart
- Proverbs 4:23
“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.”
Prayer: Lord, guard his little heart. Protect him from all the sinful things this world will throw at him. For we know that our actions flow from the feelings of our heart. Amen!
There are too many pressures in this world to count. Our sons will need Christ to keep them guarded and on the right path.
13. Works Hard
- Colossians 3:23
“And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men,”
Prayer: Lord, whether it’s in sports, school, or work, I pray that he works hard no matter what. That through every area of his life, he would find ways to bring you glory. Even when he loses a sports game, gets a bad grade on his test, or messes up at work, help him to shake it off and continue working hard. Amen.
No matter where life takes our little boy, our hope and prayer is that he work hard and glorify God.
14. Learns from his mistakes
- Philippians 3:13
“ Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before,”
Prayer: Lord, we all make mistakes. I know that our son will fail over and over again too. I pray that he learns from these mistakes and grows from them. That through those times, he would only grow stronger in his faith. Thank you for your forgiveness! Amen.
This Bible verse for sons is key. As humans, we are bound to make mistakes, and God wants us to take what we’ve done in the past, learn from it, and keep moving forward.
15. Has Compassion for others
- Ephesians 4:32
“And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.”
Prayer: Lord, I know this world is full of judgement. I pray that you would guard his heart and soul. That he would be the change of love and compassion for others. Help him to see others as you do and to find patience in their differences. Amen.
This world is full of sins, comparisons, and pressure. As our sons grow up, it is our hope and prayer that they see their own value without comparing themselves to others.
How to Encourage Your Son’s Faith Through Childhood
Proverbs 1:8-9 states, “8My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching: 9for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.” As parents, it is our responsibility to instruct and teach our children in the best way that we can–providing them with an example of Christ’s love that will encourage them through childhood.
In Proverbs 22:6, it says that if we do this, then our encouragement and training through childhood will stay with our sons when they are grown. Here are three ways we can Biblically encourage our sons and their faith in hopes that it carries with them into adulthood:
Prayer is so powerful! Whether you’re praying for your son, with your son, or with your entire family, this will teach and show them the strength of your faith and how it is impacting your life. Using the Bible verses for sons above is a great place to start when you are beginning your journey to praying and encouraging your son through childhood.
Read the Bible
There are so many ways that you can Biblically encourage your son throughout his childhood! Reading the Bible is one that will make a lasting impression! You could simply make a habit of having quiet time to read your Bible around him. When your son sees you doing this, he is learning what it means to rely on God’s word. You could structure family Bible time. You could read a scripture a night before bed. You could even use some of the Bible verses for sons to read and memorize once a week as a game! No matter how you incorporate reading the Bible in your son’s childhood, it will greatly impact his relationship with Christ.
Attend Church Regularly
The final way to encourage your son’s faith through childhood is to make an effort, as a family, to attend church regularly. Matthew 18:20 says, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.” Other than modeling your faith to your son daily through prayer and reading scripture, one of the best ways to help him grow in his faith throughout childhood is to provide him with many opportunities to learn about Christ and feel Christ’s presence when people of the church are gathered together for Him.
These 15 Bible Verses for Sons are a great place to start when praying over and thinking about how we can best raise our sons and encourage their faith through childhood. As parents of faith, it is our hope and prayer that our sons grow to be strong men of faith, and I hope you found this article a great starting point in your journey to doing so.
