Being pregnant can be the most wonderful time in your life and expectant mothers often pray for a safe and healthy pregnancy without any complications. However, pregnancy complications do happen sometimes and if you are experiencing pregnancy complications, you may be feeling anxious or discouraged. If you’re searching for comfort in the word of God, there are so many Bible verses for pregnancy complications to encourage and sustain you through this difficult time.
As Christians, we know that the Lord has a plan for each one of us and he always holds us close. But it’s a lot harder to remember those truths when we’re dealing with the uncertainty of pregnancy complications.
Even in the most difficult times of our lives, remember God sees and understands our pain.
Dear friend, let that be a comfort to you as you continue through this season of waiting. In the meantime, here are 10 Bible verses for pregnancy complications to comfort and uplift you.
10 Bible Verses for Pregnancy Complications
Update: I actually wrote this article before I was pregnant with my second baby girl. She ended up being born with a rare congenital heart defect that we were not prepared for. I’ll link her story here, but all of these verses have comforted me through that difficult season.
Isaiah 43:2
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.” (NIV)
In difficult times, we can sometimes feel like we’re drowning. This verse is a promise that no matter how deep the water is, we are never alone. Even when the waters rise, God is with us and he won’t let us fall beneath the surface.
Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (NIV)
God promises not only to watch over us in times of trouble, but also to give us peace. Pregnancy is a season of wonder and also of waiting. His peace can heal our anxious hearts when no one else can. When we feel anxious, this verse reminds us that we can approach our Heavenly Father in prayer and he will always be there to comfort us.

John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (NIV)
The peace that Jesus promised here is not a peace we can find in the world. Jesus never said we wouldn’t face pain or heartbreak in this life, but instead asked us not to be afraid. We all face times of uncertainty and it’s easy to let our hearts become troubled in those times. Jesus’ words in this verse can steady our hearts and help us focus our eyes on him.
Philippians 4:13
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (NIV)
It is only through his strength that we can get by. So often we try to rely on our own strength and we fail. Thankfully, God is gracious and he gives us the strength we need to make it through every situation. If you are feeling lost or weak in your current situation, remember your strength comes from the Lord and he will never fail you.
Psalm 18:6
“In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.” (NIV)
One of our struggles as Christians in times of distress is we may feel like our prayers fall on deaf ears. Putting our faith in a God we can’t see makes us wonder if he is even listening. In seasons when we find ourselves crying out to him, verses such as this one remind us of the truth that God does hear us and he is listening.
Psalm 55:22
“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let
the righteous be shaken.” (NIV)
In the middle of a complicated pregnancy, you may feel as though your whole world has been shaken. If you’re finding it hard to go about your daily life and focus on anything but your worry, dear friend, you’re not alone. The Lord wants us to cast our cares on him so he can carry our burdens for us.
Psalm 112:7
“They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.” (NIV)
The fear of bad news is what keeps us up at night in a situation like this one. But much like the other Bible verses for pregnancy complications, this verse draws our attention to the truth of God’s faithfulness. As mothers, we can’t help but worry sometimes about our little ones, but the truth is God is still in control and we have to trust the plan he has for us.
Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11 is often used as an encouragement for someone who is trying to find their way and this verse has been a reminder of God’s promises in the lives of many. During this season of pregnancy, reading this verse may remind you as well that God has plans to prosper you and will make everything work out for your good.
Isaiah 26:3-4
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.” (NIV)
In this season of life, peace may be the one thing you need the most. When we trust in the Lord, his peace surrounds us and protects us. He is eternal, he is unchanging, and he cares for you, friend.
Psalm 139:13-14
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (NIV)
Out of all the Bible verses for pregnancy complications, this psalm is one of the most well-known. A precious friend may have even spoken it over you when you were feeling down on yourself and needed encouragement. But it’s important to remember now that it applies to your little one as well. Even though you may not have met the precious life growing inside you, God knows exactly who they are and who they will become.

How to Pray Through Complications
Maybe your heart desires to seek the Lord in this time, but you’re not sure how. When we’re going through a difficult season, we may not know how to approach God in prayer. Here are some helpful reminders and truths to help you prayer through pregnancy complications:
- Come as you are. You don’t need to be polished, or put-together to approach the Lord in prayer.
- Pray the scriptures over yourself and your little one. The scriptures are more than just encouragement, they’re God’s promises to us. Don’t be afraid to declare them over your situation.
- Be honest. It’s okay to approach God with our fears, anxiety, and doubts. He sees our hearts and there’s no reason for us to hide our hurt from him.
- Ask a friend or significant other to pray with you. Whether you simply need encouragement or need someone to stand with you, ask a trusted loved one to pray for you when you’re struggling with doubt.
- If you don’t have the words, simply sit and listen. Maybe you try to pray, but you feel as though you don’t have the words.. Sit in his presence instead, and let him speak to your heart.
How to Trust God Through Uncertainty
Many of the Bible verses we shared asked for us to trust God, but what does trusting God look like when you’re so uncertain of the future? Trusting God is not something we only do one time, it’s something we often have to choose everyday (sometimes even every hour). Here are some tips to help you trust God through the uncertainty:
- Remind yourself often of God’s word. When you’re feeling discouraged, spend some time in the scriptures. When we remind ourselves of who God is, we are able to believe he’s in control.
- Trusting God doesn’t mean we won’t ever experience doubt. Don’t beat yourself up if you’re having a tough day.
- Take it day by day. You may be overwhelmed if you try to think of too much at once. Ask God to give you the strength to get through each day, and to fresh each morning.
- Worship him often. Giving praise to God can strengthen our faith and get us through the toughest of times.
